How to Transfer Markings From Patterns

If you are using sewing patterns for making your own outdoor gear, many of them will have markings that need to be transferred from the pattern to the fabric that you are using. On Stitchback patterns these markings will be shown in red. Transferring these markings is made easy with the use of a tracing wheel and paper. This article will go over the process of using these tools to mark your fabric.

Overview of the Tools

A tracing wheel and paper can be found at most craft stores and online. The tracing wheel consists of a handle with a small toothed wheel at the end. Transfer paper (confusingly also referred to as marking paper, wax free tracing paper, or chalk paper) is a sheet of paper with a thin layer of powdery ink applied to one side. It is available in several colors and you’ll want to choose a color that will be visible on the color of fabric you are using.

Step one

Make sure that the paper pattern is aligned with the edges of the cut out fabric. It can be helpful to use pins or weights to keep the pattern from moving.  Slide the transfer paper in between the pattern and the fabric, with the ink side toward the fabric.

Step two

Use the tracing wheel to trace over any marks that need to be transferred to the fabric. You’ll want to apply a bit of pressure with the wheel. The teeth on the tracing wheel push the paper into the fabric leaving a dotted line on the fabric. Carefully remove the transfer paper to avoid smearing the marks.

Step three

If the piece you are marking was cut out on the fold. The markings should be transferred to the other half of the part as well. The same holds true for parts that have both a right and a left. Repeat the process for the other half, or part, by flipping the paper pattern over. You should be able to see the holes in the paper pattern from where you previously traced it, to indicate where the markings are.

Note: Generally the pattern will indicate which side of the fabric to mark. On Stitchback patterns the marks should be on the right side of the fabric unless otherwise noted.
